Univar expands distribution deal with Unicat Catalyst Technologies

Brussels, Belgium7th September 2011 – Univar Inc., a leading global chemical distributor, announced today that it has expanded its agreement with Unicat Catalyst Technologies to include the company’s new developments in SMR (Steam Methane Reforming) technology. Univar will market and distribute these across Europe and North America.

The expanded agreement includes the tri-functional catalyst SR-113, the advanced desulphurising systems and products, as well as the new Steam Reforming Catalyst 700 series (MAH), which are used in the increasing numbers of hydrogen plants being installed in oil refineries and petrochemical sites. Univar has added these products to its portfolio following a successful five-year partnership with Unicat.

“Univar’s specialist knowledge of the energy sector and excellent geographical coverage have proven to be a winning formula over the last five years. We look forward to building on this success with the introduction of our new products,” says Eric Steens of Unicat Catalyst Technologies.

“Unicat is a valued supplier and its range is an important feature in our portfolio,” says Ellert Spaans, Industry Manager Energy EMEA, Univar. “The new products offer a major technical breakthrough for customers and will rapidly join the rest of the advanced technology-driven Unicat products as market leaders in this field."

The Multi-Axial-Hole (MAH) design of Unicat’s 700 series offers enhanced performance both in terms of lower delta P and higher activity for steam reforming. These new 700 series products, based on nickel technology, are able to lower the pressure drop in reactors by up to 20% and increase the available active surface of the catalyst by more than 15% compared to other similar catalyst products on the market. The new and advanced shape of the 700 Series is one of the biggest innovations in this industry application for 30 years.

The SR-113, which combines three functions in one catalyst - HDS, COS hydrolysis and H2S removal - significantly optimises the performance of typical CoMo/ZnO purification units, especially where feed sulphur levels are quite low, and maximum sulphur removal capacity is required.  For many applications, Unicat SR-113 can provide the most economical solution for combined HDS and H2S removal applications.

The advanced sulphur removal solutions, including advanced polishing layers for COS and Organic Sulphur Species, can lower the net sulphur leakage by a factor 10 which will significantly optimise the lifetime of downstream units such as the Reformer and CO Shift units.
