Silicon Resins for Coatings

Silicon Resins and Intermediates can be used in Coating formulations to improve properties like durability, weatherability and high temperature resistance.

Silicon Resins can be used as such or are cold blended with for example polyester, epoxy or alkyd melamins systems to improve heat resistance, gloss and color retention, moisture, corrosion and UV resistance.

Intermediates based on Silicon chemistry are typically used  in the copolymerization of resins. Silicon-alkyd hybrids for example are often used resins for improvement of outdoor durability of decorative finishes but also find application in transportation coatings.

Silicon Resins for thermal stability
Silicon Resins are the ideal choice for formulating high temperature resistant coatings like found on bakeware, bbq grills, exhaust pipes and heat exchangers. Due to the bond strength of Si-O some of these resins can withstand temperatures up to 700^oC for several hours! Silicon resins can be found as powder and in solution. Also high solids versions are available. Silicon resins can be found at different degrees of hardness, from soft to hard.

Silicon Resins for coil coatings 
Coil coatings typically are prepared from polyester resins. Modifying polyester resin with silicon resins greatly increases long term durability for outdoor metal panels as for example used in roof and side wall construction.

Silicon Resins for marine and protective coatings
Epoxy coatings form the basis of many protective coatings for steel. Ships, bridges, tanks, power plants and pipeline coatings form examples of steelwork that needs coverage by the best coatings. Epoxy silicon hybrid coatings have proven excellent color and gloss retention, improved corrosion, salt water and chemical resistance.

Silicon Intermediates
Silicon intermediates have the ability to react with organic resins. Typically at condensation temperatures of 150-170^oC silanol or silicon alkoxy groups can react with organic resins provided they add carbinol functionality. True synthetic hybrids of silicon and for example polyester, epoxy or alkyds resins can be formed this way. Silicon hybrid resins form basis for coatings for various high temperature and outdoor applications.
