Zero waste water (Italy)
Univar in Italy has been working at improving waste water discharges. The project is a great success – the new system at two of our sites means that there is no discharge to sewer at all!!!
Marco Davoli – site manger at Gualtieri explains how we achieved this impressive improvement.
“Today, our waste water system can treat water before it is discharged into the public drain system. As of 2009, after a brief test period of fine adjustment, waste waters will no longer be discharged, but will be reused thanks to this innovative system, which will allow us to save precious water. If we look at the investment and management costs, and consider the considerable savings in water and discharge costs along with the positive visibility we will have with the public administration we can say this is a success for our company!”
Dr Olivier Fanton from our Torino site adds, “We expect the same success at our Torino site. Once we have finished doing the trials we will be able to recycle waste water – this is not only a cost saving but a significant environmental benefit.”
The site is not only ensuring full legal compliance but is going a step further by reducing water usage. Under our U+ programme, waste minimisation is one of the environmental improvement KPIs, so this is a great step in the right direction!

Giuseppe Nardella, Regional Operations Director adds, “This important milestone will be added to another important point - U+ certification. Even if these two sites haven’t received the certification yet, they have been working hard for months to obtain the important and ambitious objective desired by Senior Management, organised and supervised by our European SHEQ Director Mr. Michael Cooke. Working hard to be in line with the rigorous standards required by the certification, we have seen our sites grow in terms of organisation, safety, quality, cleanliness and optimisation of structures raw materials and company resources.
We are very sure that this certificate has enriched our company and everyone of us.”
