Univar’s solution to Paracetamol security of supply
Closure of production line should not cause a headache
Frankfurt, Germany, 30 September 2008 – Today at the CPhI Worldwide pharmaceutical ingredients event, Univar presented solutions in order to meet the growing demand for a commonly used medicine for pain relief, Paracetamol, despite the closing at the end of 2008 of the major European Paracetamol production line.
Paracetamol (also known as Acetaminophen or APAP) is one of the most popular analgesics used around the world (alone or incorporated in multi-ingredient preparations). 115,000 tonnes of Paracetamol are consumed globally every year, 25% of which is in Europe. The global demand is growing at a rate of close to 2% every year. As with every Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API), Paracetamol requires expertise to ensure that the supply chain meets the requirements of the European Commission directive 2004/27/EC to maintain both the appropriate standard of quality and consistent supply.
This is even more relevant now that one of the biggest global suppliers, based in France, has decided to close the last Paracetamol active ingredient production line in Europe by the end of 2008.
In order to anticipate the shortage and to tackle the complex regulatory issues, Univar reacted immediately by identifying the best alternative solutions that will both fulfill customers’ demands for Paracetamol and also offer the best and safest supply route to the market in Europe and the Americas.
